Radio City 96.7 has been broadcasting to Merseyside, the North West and North Wales for over 35 years, making it one of the longest running and successful radio stations in the UK. Broadcasting initially from Stanley Street, the radio station, alongside sister stations Magic 1548 and City Talk 105.9, currently operates from studios based in St John’s Beacon, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, and has done so since July 2000.
Whilst serving the people of Liverpool with local news, presenters and music, the station and it’s listeners have raised well in excess of £500,000 for local children with it’s Give A Child A Chance and Cash For Kids charities. We have also entertained well in excess of 100,000 listeners with a series of free live events, and has also recently launched a new training initiative in conjunction with the National Broadcasting School.
The construction of St John’s Beacon began in 1965, it’s main purpose to provide a ventilation shaft for the shopping complex below. Standing 138 metres above sea level, the tower is the second tallest in Liverpool, dwarfed only by the recently erected Beetham West Tower.
The beacon became famous as a revolving restaurant, opening in 1970 until it’s closure some eight years later. Other than a brief stint in the early 1980’s, the beacon remained closed for over 21 years, until both Radio City and Land Securities breathed new life in the tower, investing millions in it’s redevelopment, and remains today home to Radio City’s 7 state-of-the-art digital studios, offices and function rooms.
